ABOUT
Born, 1977 in United States
Resides and works in Kansas City
Matthew R. Paden is an award-winning American artist whose large-scale works explore gesture, presence, and restraint. Working from his private studio, Paden creates evocative figurative and abstract compositions that reside in both private and public collections.

Rooted in spontaneity, his practice seeks honesty over perfection—each piece an invitation for quiet collaboration between artist, subject, and viewer. He pares down the visual noise, focusing on movement, form, and atmosphere to evoke what lies beneath the surface.

Paden’s aesthetic is grounded in what he calls essential seeing: an approach that allows the moment to unfold without judgment. The result is work that feels both intimate and open—suggesting more than it declares.

His journey began in 1997 with “Victory Touchdown,” a debut piece that received statewide honors in Oregon and was later exhibited at the United States Capitol. Decades later, his work continues to pursue what cannot always be said aloud—but can still be felt.
Artist Statement
Unspoken is a quiet exploration of form, memory, and presence. I’m drawn to what lingers beneath the surface—postures that speak in silence, gestures that hold more than words can offer. In this series, I strip away excess to focus on the essential: light, line, and breath.
Each mark is both deliberate and uncertain, a conversation between control and release. These figures are not portraits, but impressions—moments suspended in charcoal and space. I invite the viewer to pause, to listen, and to find themselves in the stillness. What is not said is sometimes the most revealing.
